Services include General, Plastics, Ortho, Podiatry, Gyne, GU, Eye, ENT, and Oral Surgery.Observes sterile technique of all personnel, assists in draping, passes instruments, sponges, sutures, and other sterile supplies and equipment to surgeons and assistants during procedures, holds retraction devices, and acts to anticipate and respond to surgeons needs during course of surgery.Receives surgical specimens, places in same preservative solutions, and notifies circulating nurse of source of material.Counts sponges, needles, and instruments used during surgery before closing, and assists with sterile dressing of operative site following closing.Assists with circulating duties under the direct supervision of registered nurse.Cleans operating room and disposes of used case carts and instruments according to established procedures. Assists in returning supplies and equipment to proper storage; separates, cleans, and prepares instruments as necessary, and so forth.Functions as a clinical resource person to various department personnel, new employees, and student technologists. Assist by precepting students and new employees.Attends mandatory department meetings. Keeps current regarding developments in surgical equipment, trends and techniques, through appropriate in-service programs.Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with department and outside agencies.Supports and is involved in the ASCs continuous quality improvement efforts designed to increase patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and improve the utilization of the ASCs human, capital, and physical resources.QUALIFICATIONS:The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit. This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional, and psycho-social needs of the patient population served.Work requires the ability to read and write in order to interpret schedule and prepare for operative procedures, knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, through successful completion of an accredited program in Surgical Technology usually one year beyond high school.Work requires surgical technologist to be able to accurately identify large volumes of surgical instruments and supplies, acquire necessary familiarity with surgeons preferences, and gain knowledge of unit policies and procedures.Interpersonal skills necessary in order to interact with patients, surgeons, and other patient care personnel, often during emergency or stressful situations.Analytical skills necessary in order to organize and prepare operating room according to standard methods and procedures.WORKING ENVIRONMENT:Works primarily in surgical suites with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature, and the like.Works in a patient care area where there is exposure to infectious disease, although potential for personal harm or bodily injury is limited when employee follows all safety procedures and uses appropriate safety equipment.
